The end of June each year in Isernia sees the city's streets come alive with religious processions, colourful icons and the smells of traditional recipes being prepared for this very special occasion. The Feast of San Pietro celebrates the city's patron saint, San Pietro Celestino of Isernia, who founded many remote hermitages in the region. He was the only pope in history to renounce his title, after being disappointed and exploited by the corruption of the Holy See.
